Excerpt

We faced each other for a beat or two. Then he placed his arm around my shoulder and took my hand in his, positioning his body a respectable distance away. We danced, slow and reserved at first, but as the singer’s wails intensified, so did Charlie’s moves. His hips swayed from side to side, and he inched closer to me, smidgen by smidgen, until his pelvis ground against my hipbones.

Our bodies melded, moving together in perfect synchronicity. Side to side. Back and forth. He moved his hand to my lower back and pulled me closer. I took in a quick, sharp breath. He

“You know, baby,” he murmured, “You and me have more than chemistry. We have fire. Not the easy kind of fire you can make from a box of matches, but the kind of fire you get when you rub two sticks together. I’m all yours if you want me.”

The world around me blurred as if I were watching it through thick lenses. I imagined Charlie’s lips against mine. I imagined him shirtless, propped above me, his triceps bulging as he slowly lowered his chest—mine rising toward his, beckoning him closer. He groaned a low animal-like sound. It drew me to him.

And I wanted him bad.

I wanted our bodies to burn in Hell together for all eternity.

What was happening? Had I lost my mind? I wasn’t ready. Was I?

No.

Spasms of panic surged from my loins to the deepest recesses in my brain. In a sharp snap, the imaginary lenses cracked, and through the broken glass was a clear image of a boy with kind eyes and a halo of yellow hair.

Keir was my angel, and I was dancing with the devil. A devil who would betray his brother. A devil who would convince me to betray him as well.

I shuddered and pressed my free hand, fiercely against his shoulder. He clutched me tighter.

“Charlie, please. We can’t do this.”

“Why not?” he demanded.

I took in a long, ragged breath. “Because I don’t want to hurt Keir. He likes me.”

He forced a laugh and loosened his grip. My hand  slipped from his, and he leaned toward me. His chin brushed against my cheek, and flesh bumps shimmied down my spine.

“That was the right answer, New Jersey,” he whispered in a throaty voice. “Welcome to the gang.”

Blog Tour- THE PHYSICS OF GRIEF by Mickey J. Corrigan With An Excerpt & #Giveaway! @QuoScript #ThePhysicsOfGrief

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the THE PHYSICS OF GRIEF by Mickey J. Corrigan Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: THE PHYSICS OF GRIEF

Author: Mickey J. Corrigan

Pub. Date: April 22, 2021

Publisher: QuoScript UK

Pages: 210

Formats: Paperback, eBook

Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, Kindle, B&N, TBD, Bookshop.org

Seymour, a down-and-out former teacher and semi-alcoholic who is haunted by the death of his girlfriend, tells the story of how he lifted himself out of grief and apathy. The catalyst is a mystery man - Raymond C. Dasher - who enters Seymour's life via a chance encounter and persuades him to accept a job as a professional griever. A series of adventures follow, some macabre, some sinister, some extremely funny, as Seymour encounters an improbably diverse but highly credible set of characters united only by the fact that all are interacting in some way with death. Most complex is Milton Lasker, a former mobster whose relationship with Seymour is ambivalent, to say the least - even his overtures of help are terrifying. But then there's Yvonne, who reminds Seymour what it's like to feel alive. The Physics of Grief is a unique, quirky crime novel presenting the upside of funerals and a hopeful look at second chances - and at death.

Book Trailer:

Excerpt:

"I hope I'm not interrupting anything," the man said. "I've seen you in here a few times this week and … if I may be frank? You look like you need something to do. It just so happens I have a bit of work that might interest you."

His lips smiled while his eyes stared out coldly from some unknowable interior space. In the crowded café, he was closer to me than the pandemic six-feet regulation allowed, but that didn't faze me. At this point in my life, an early visit from the grim reaper would've been welcome.

"Shall I tell you about the job?" he asked.

His solicitous demeanor gave me the kind of creeps I got around priests and undertakers. For good reason, it turned out. The man slid his business card across the stained Formica table. Raymond C. Dasher, Professional Grievers, Inc. was printed on a laminated white card with a local phone number in the same basic block font.

"Here's how it works," Raymond said. "My service is unique, and I have built my reputation on the promise of complete discretion. My clients come to me reluctantly when they are desperate for help, desperate enough to pay top dollar for my services. And with what do I provide them? I provide them with peace of mind at a time of utmost vulnerability. I provide them with a means of exiting the stage to a standing ovation. A way to say farewell with the kind of royal fanfare they think they deserve. Especially now that funerals are less populated. In the modern era, virus or no virus, we should give the dying whatever they desire. Don't you agree?"

He glanced around us at the café crowd and smiled in a patronizing way before he continued to pontificate. "In Nigeria when a relative dies you shave your head and refuse to answer the telephone. Can you imagine anyone in our society willing to make such a sacrifice? In certain Australian tribes after the death of a spouse the widow never speaks again. She uses sign language for the rest of her life. No American wife would ever consider shutting up to mourn the loss of her husband." He shook his head in disapproval. "The Canadian Ojibwa would pour ashes on their heads after a loved one died, and the men pushed knives, needles, or thorns through the skin of their chests and arms. The LoDagaa of Ghana are said to bind up the relatives of the deceased in order to restrain their grief. Many cultures once buried alive those closest to the recently departed. Women and slaves were walled up in tombs, some with a view of the church conducting the funeral. Victorians dressed in black and behaved like living monuments to the dead for years afterward."

The café manager wore a thick double mask. He circled, waiting to come in for the kill. He wanted his table back. When he flapped the check at me, I waved him away. "Go on," I said to Raymond.

It's Senior Week, that magical in-between time after classes have ended but before graduation, chock-full of gimmicky theme parties, last-minute bonding, and family traditions. Olivia couldn't be more ready. Class salutatorian and confident in her future at LSU, she's poised to sail through to the next phase of her life.

But when the tiny hiccup of an unsigned off-campus P.E. form puts Olivia in danger of not graduating at all, she has one week to set things straight without tipping off her very big and very nosy extended family. Volunteering to help at a local golf tournament should do it, but since Olivia's mom equipped her phone with a tracking app, there'll be no hiding the fact that she's at the golf course instead of all the graduation parties happening at the same time. Unless, that is, she can convince the Fab Four--her ride-or-die cousins and best friends Sophie, Charlie, and Wes--to trade phones with her as they go through the motions of playing Olivia for the week.

Sure, certain members of the golf team are none too pleased with Olivia's sudden "passion" for the game. And sure, a very cute, very off-limits boy keeps popping up in Olivia's orbit. But she is focused! She has a schedule and a plan! Nothing can possibly go wrong . . . right?

Riley Oh can't wait to see her sister get initiated into the Gom clan, a powerful lineage of Korean healing witches their family has belonged to for generations. Her sister, Hattie, will earn her Gi bracelet and finally be able to cast spells without adult supervision. Although Riley is desperate to follow in her sister's footsteps when she herself turns thirteen, she's a saram--a person without magic. Riley was adopted, and despite having memorized every healing spell she's ever heard, she often feels like the odd one out in her family and the gifted community.

Then Hattie gets an idea: what if the two of them could cast a spell that would allow Riley to share Hattie's magic? Their sleuthing reveals a promising incantation in the family's old spell book, and the sisters decide to perform it at Hattie's initiation ceremony. If it works, no one will ever treat Riley as an outsider again. It's a perfect plan!

Until it isn't. When the sisters attempt to violate the laws of the Godrealm, Hattie's life ends up hanging in the balance, and to save her Riley has to fulfill an impossible task: find the last fallen star. But what even is the star, and how can she find it?

As Riley embarks on her search, she finds herself meeting fantastic creatures and collaborating with her worst enemies. And when she uncovers secrets that challenge everything she has been taught to believe, Riley must decide what it means to be a witch, what it means to be family, and what it really means to belong.

Twin pinpricks of light blur into the marsh. Marny rubs his tired eyes, the fog always makes it hard to see anything. Though after ten years up in this tower, he didn’t need the long glass to recognise a carriage from Kimbesh.

“Look at my hands Cap, I can barely move em. S’like they’re covered in syrup.”

Ten years. Hardly how the old man thought he’d be spending his retirement; Captain of the the poorest militia in what was once the empire, and stuck in a crumbling tower listening to a new-horn whine.

“So damn cold, my mug is steaming, see that?”

“Not the only thing steaming up here, you pile of shit,” Marny growls.

The trim of his bluecoat dusts the stone where he spins. But there isn’t much room up on this side of the tower to pace. Two other soldiers huddle around the beacon light in the centre. Marny scowls at them, before turning back towards the countryside with a sigh. Gnarled hands work at the cold that needles his joints.

“Worthless bunch of cast offs,” he mumbles, and someone coughs behind him. This day has been a long one; born in the morning, and still not put to bed. And there is a creeping feeling of unease that has been with him almost all night.

Marny scratches his nose. Only the moon is out, its ample body becoming half-hidden by a porridge of clouds. The other lights have fully retreated - and everything else too. As if the stars might be children, caught red-handed past their bedtime. All of the toys, all of the games have been snatched away, leaving only that one forgotten lamp and the sheet they hid under.

The clop of boots from a heavy-set man tells him all he needs to know about who is approaching. “Gab,” he says.

“Don’t tell me you’re up here complaining again like an old woman?” Gabin says from the top of a ladder. Of the men here the quartermaster is the finest and most warmly dressed. His blue coat has been neatly ironed, and there are no stains on the grey wool shirt. Though the size of his girth emerging out of the trap door to the main room below, doesn’t flatter.

“I’ve been stuck up in this mud hole for a week shitting in my helmet,” the old man answers back, head cocked. “You can bugger it.”

About The Book:

This Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, Kidlit tour runs for two weeks from April 26th-30th & May 3rd-7th, will have one or two stops a day on a Blog or Instagram and consist of reviews, excerpts, & spotlights. Physical copies & eBooks available. There will be images for Instagram stops.

About The Book:

From a New York Times bestselling author and Caldecott-honor winning artist comes an exuberant illustrated story about playing dress up, having fun, and feeling free.

The boy loves to be naked. He romps around his house naked and wild and free. Until he romps into his parents' closet and is inspired to get dressed. First he tries on his dad's clothes, but they don't fit well. Then he tries on his mom's clothes, and wow! The boy looks great. He looks through his mom's jewelry and makeup and tries that on, too. When he's discovered by his mother and father, the whole family (including the dog!) get in on the fun, and they all get dressed together.

This charming and humorous story was inspired by bestselling and award-winning author Peter Brown's own childhood, and highlights nontraditional gender roles and self-expression.
